Competition Classes
- The Muncie Obedience Training Club has a long history of offering obedience classes dating back to the 1960s.
- MOTC’s competition classes are geared to prepare the dog/handler team to compete in AKC trials to obtain any of the various Obedience, Rally, and Scent Work titles.
- Our trials feature dogs that are well behaved at home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs.
- It is essential that the competition dog demonstrates willingness and enjoyment while it is working with the handler.

Novice Classes
- Dog/handler teams will build on their skill in the novice exercises, including heeling off-lead, and learn the techniques needed to attain qualifying scores in AKC trials.
- Practicing in a variety of places is essential to the success of each team. Dogs must be able to work around other dogs, on leash, without signs of aggression, and minimal distractions.
- A flat collar or martingale is recommended for this class. Handlers will want to bring plenty of high-value treats.
Open Classes
- Expands on off-lead heeling and introduces the broad and high jumps and the retrieving exercises.
- Handlers will continue to improve their handling skills.
- Dogs must be able to work around other dogs, on and off leash, without signs of aggression, and among distractions.
- Handlers will want to bring plenty of high-value treats.
Utility Classes
- New exercises introduced in this class are scent discrimination, the directed retrieve, and directed jumping.
- At this training level, dogs work on their own more so than at any previous level. Thus, the class is designed to build the dog’s confidence in working without constant direction.

- SCENT WORK CLASS
Class Details
The sport of Scent Work is based on the work of professional detection dogs (such as drug dogs), employed by humans to detect a wide variety of scents and substances. In AKC Scent Work, dogs search for cotton swabs saturated with the essential oils of Birch, Anise, Clove, and Cypress. The cotton swabs are hidden out of sight in a pre-determined search area, and the dog has to find them. Teamwork is necessary: when the dog finds the scent, he/she has to communicate the find to the handler, who calls it out to the judge.” (AKC.org)
