Socialization is defined as 1) the activity of mixing socially with others or 2) the process of learning to behave in a way that is acceptable to society. It is the second definition that applies to puppy socialization.

Puppies should be exposed to a variety of sights, sounds, people, environments, and to calm, friendly dogs. This helps to ensure that, as they develop, puppies will be comfortable in a wide variety of situations, thus reducing fear reactions.

Puppy class is a good opportunity to provide puppies with some of the exposure and experiences they need to become confident dogs. We do not allow puppies to play with each other as this can cause anxiety and fear aggression in some.

Unsure of what you can do to help socialize your new puppy? Here is a Puppy Socialization Checklist put together by the Louisiana SPCA.
